You know that I don't believe in books to teach conversation.

There is nothing like real life to get your point around.
Gets them motivated, interested and it's a lot of fun.
The way I leaned to speak Chinese was on a "I need something so I have to figure out how to ask for it".

I try to apply the same thing to my students.

Here is an example of what I'm talking about.
He says "我要騎摩車" Which means, I want to go ride motorcycle.

The first step is to identify what he wants.
The key verb here is "want (要)". You explain the verb and make examples on how to use it.
To ride a motorcycle(摩托車) you need gloves(手套), jacket(夾克), helmet(安全帽) and a motorcycle .

You use this new vocabulary combined with a the verb and you get "live English"I want gloves(我要手套). I want a jacket.(我要夾克) And so on.

Beats the hell out of "Open your book to page 12."
"Repeat after me ."   "I want  a ball. I want  a doll."

When you are done with the subject, find an other one.

(我喜歡賽車)  I "like" go-kart.
